Treat Yo’ Self!

This story is not about the woman pictured.

The other day a client came into Twin Wolves and was talking to me about how she struggles to spend money on herself, even if it’s something that improves her health and wellbeing.

This isn’t unusual, we often put other people (and pets!) before ourselves, sometimes not really taking care of ourselves until we’re really suffering and we have no choice.

This woman came in to do a sauna and cold plunge and said she felt so good and so refreshed afterwards and that she felt really thankful that she decided to take the time for herself and to show herself deep care.

Her and I talked about how taking care of ourselves really does offer care for other people. If we have children and pets that need our care, we are better able to be a support for them if we are functioning optimally. The less we care for ourselves, the less of ourselves is available to care for others.

It reminded me of the time I lived in Kingsbury, Texas on an art farm called Habitable Spaces. I was there to create an animation and to help out around the farm. I woke up early to feed the goats, chickens, and rabbits and I did a bunch of odd jobs around the farm. While staying there, I made good friends with another farm-hand named Jackson. This was when the television show “Twin Peaks: The Return” was to start airing for the first time on TV and Jackson and I were both fans of the creator, David Lynch. We lived 45mins from any major town and we found that a venue in San Antonio would be screening the episodes each Sunday. So, we made a thing of it.

Jackson and I created “Sunday Funday,” where we (and anyone else who might be interested that day) would drive out to San Antonio on Sunday afternoon. I usually would walk along the Riverwalk while Jackson would go shopping and then we would meet back up outside the venue, we’d stop in at a craft market that had tarot cards, furniture and doughnuts (among other things, haha) and we always each bought a fancy doughnut. Then, we would sit down and watch “Twin Peaks: The Return” with a crowd of people. It was so much fun. We’d get all amped about Sunday Funday coming up. Sundaaayyy Fundaaayyy!

Choosing set times to love and care for ourselves is so important for our physical and mental wellbeing. Including a buddy in the planning can sometimes make it easier.

I challenge you to create your own Sunday Funday, if you haven’t already. Whether it’s coming to Twin Wolves to do sauna and cold plunge, red light, PEMF or halotherapy, or taking yourself out to a movie night, going to dinner or setting aside time to meditate. Regularly scheduling time for your own enjoyment and self care is so important and it helps you to be a better person to those around you, too!
